Chamber Works of Allan Blank

COMPOSER'S STATEMENT
The five works on this CD were written, or completed, between 1989 and 1994. They share, in part, some characteristics that I would like to comment on. First, my belief in the role of a motive, cell or fragment as a potential unifying element. The larger question is, of course, repetition - how it is used, how often, how varied. I do not feel enslaved by motivic thinking, but use it as a starting point, allowing me to unfold in a variety of directions, and hopefully with a sense of surprise. It is the larger balances of momentum, moods, harmonic or instrumental color, texture, design, etc., that I find myself thinking about most often. Secondly, the harmonic language, both within each work, and among these works, covers a wide range. I do not feel bound to any compositional school of thought or aesthetic attitude, but follow my ear and thinking to arrive at what I trust will be a musical solution.
